What Does an Energy Healing Session Feel Like?

If you are thinking about booking your first session, it is natural to wonder what it will actually feel like. Will you feel something strange? Will you cry? Will anything happen at all? These are fair questions, and the honest answer is that experiences vary a lot from person to person.

At Soul Awakening Academy, we train energy healers through accredited courses, so we know what clients commonly describe.

This guide explains what happens in a session, the sensations people report, and what research does and does not show. If you are curious about the practitioner side, read our guide on how to become an energy healer or explore our quantum healing courses.

What Is an Energy Healing Session?

An energy healing session is a treatment in which a practitioner works with what they describe as the body’s energy field to support relaxation and balance. Common approaches include Reiki, chakra healing, crystal healing, sound healing, and quantum healing. Sessions can happen in person or as distance healing.

Practitioners believe stress and unresolved emotion can disturb the energetic flow in the body, and that their work helps restore balance. Ideas about life force energy appear in many traditions, including qi in traditional Chinese medicine and prana in yoga.

Reiki itself is a Japanese practice founded by Mikao Usui, most likely in 1922. Science has not confirmed that an energy field exists, so energy healing is best understood as a complementary wellness practice.

What Happens During an Energy Healing Session?

Most sessions follow a similar shape and last around 45 to 60 minutes, although this varies between practitioners.

Before the Session Begins

Your practitioner will ask why you came, whether you have any health concerns, and what you would like from the session. This is the moment to mention anything that makes you uncomfortable, such as being touched. You can ask questions and stop at any time.

During the Session

You usually lie down or sit comfortably, fully clothed, in a quiet room. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above your body, often starting at the head or heart. Some work in silence, while others guide your breathing or a short meditation. Your only job is to relax and notice what comes up.

At the End of the Session

The practitioner gently brings you back to the room and often invites you to share what you noticed. You may be offered water and some simple aftercare advice. Take your time getting up.

What Does an Energy Healing Session Feel Like?

There is no right way to feel. People usually describe the experience in three layers: the body, the emotions, and the mind.

What You Might Notice

How People Describe It

Deep relaxation

Slower breathing, heavy limbs, feeling sleepy or floaty

Warmth or coolness

Heat from the practitioner’s hands or a change in temperature

Tingling or pulsing

Light buzzing or gentle pulsing in the hands, feet, or chest

Emotional release

Tears, laughter, or a wave of sadness or relief

Mental quiet

Fewer racing thoughts and a calm, meditative state

Vivid imagery

Colours, memories, or scenes behind closed eyes

Nothing at all

Simply feeling rested, which is also common

Physical Sensations

Warmth is one of the most common reports. Some people also notice tingling, light pressure, or muscle twitches, or feel as if they are floating. Many simply feel deep relaxation as their breathing slows.

Much of this fits the body’s natural relaxation response, a calming shift in the nervous system that happens when you lie still and feel safe.

Emotional Responses

Some people laugh or cry unexpectedly. Feelings can surface simply because you have finally given yourself quiet time. This can feel like a release, but if emotions become overwhelming, tell your practitioner straight away.

Trauma-informed training matters here. Our guide to trauma-informed spiritual coaching explains how responsible practitioners hold space safely.

Mental and Spiritual Experiences

Many people describe mental clarity and less mental clutter afterwards. Others enter a dreamy, meditative state or see vivid imagery. Some report a deeper sense of presence or inner peace. Why Do People Feel Such Different Things?

Several things shape your experience. Your expectations matter, as does how relaxed you are when you arrive. The practitioner’s style and the intention you set also play a part, and your own sensitivity to body sensations varies from day to day.

That is why two people can share the same room and describe completely different sessions. Neither description is wrong.

What If You Feel Nothing?

That is completely normal. Many people feel skeptical going in, and you do not need to believe in anything to enjoy a quiet hour of rest. Feeling nothing does not mean the session failed, and how much you feel is not a measure of whether it is working.

What Does Distance Healing Feel Like?

In a distance session, the practitioner works remotely while you rest at home, often on a call. People report the same calm, warmth, or tingling as in person. There is no research showing that energy travels across distance, so the quiet time and focused attention are likely a big part of what people feel.

How Will You Feel After a Session?

Afterwards, many people feel lighter, calmer, and clearer. Others feel tired, tearful, or more sensitive to noise and light for a day. Both are common.

Drink water, rest, and avoid scheduling anything demanding straight afterwards. Ground yourself with a few slow breaths, and a gentle walk or a mind-body routine can help; our guide to strengthening your mind-body connection has easy ideas.

Does Energy Healing Work? What the Research Says

This is a health-adjacent topic, so it deserves a straight answer. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) states that Reiki has not been clearly shown to be effective for any health-related purpose. It adds that most studies have been low quality with inconsistent results, and that there is no scientific evidence for the energy field itself. It also reports no harmful effects.

A 2008 systematic review reached a similar conclusion, finding the evidence insufficient to call Reiki an effective treatment for any condition.

The body does produce measurable electrical and magnetic signals, such as the heartbeat and brain activity. That is not the same as proof of a healing energy field. What people feel in a session, especially deep relaxation, is real, even if the theory behind it is unproven. That is why we describe energy healing as complementary, not as a treatment.

Can Energy Healing Help With Stress?

Relaxation is the most consistent benefit people report. Lying quietly, breathing slowly, and being cared for can ease stress and support overall well-being, much like meditation does. That is different from treating anxiety, depression, or pain, which need proper medical or psychological support.

Is Energy Healing Safe? When to See a Doctor

For most healthy adults, a gentle session carries little risk. Keep these points in mind:

  • Energy healing is not a substitute for medical care, and practitioners cannot diagnose conditions.

  • See your GP for persistent pain, fatigue, anxiety, or low mood.

  • Never stop prescribed treatment because of a session.

  • Choose a practitioner who explains consent and boundaries, as set out in our guide to ethics in trauma-aware spiritual coaching.

How to Choose a Good Energy Healer

Because energy healing is not a regulated profession in the UK, anyone can use the title. A few checks help you find someone trustworthy:

  • Ask about their training and accreditation.

  • Check that they carry professional insurance.

  • Look for clear explanations of consent and what the session involves.

Walk away from anyone who promises a cure, claims to diagnose illness, or suggests you stop medication. A responsible practitioner knows their limits and refers you on when needed.

Tips for Your First Energy Healing Session

  • Choose a trained, accredited practitioner and ask what to expect.

  • Wear comfortable clothes and avoid a heavy meal beforehand.

  • Set a simple intention, such as rest or clarity.

  • Stay open without forcing anything to happen.

  • Note down what you felt afterwards.
